Content Information/Activity - Part I

With a comparison/contrast essay, it is easy to simply write as if this were a long list for each topic. That makes for dull reading. You need to add details. The next activity will help you to focus on details.

A. Go outside and get a rock - yes, a rock. Bring in back. (5 minutes)  Participate in the "All About My Rock" activity. There is a space on Canvas for this activity. Take notes there.

  • Shape
  • General color
  • Distinguishing visual features
  • Distinguishing tactile features
  • Size  (What else is about the same size? Compare the two.)
  • Weight  (What else is about the same size? Compare the two.)
  • Sound
  • History
  • 10 possible uses - yes, list 10!
Using sentences, describe your rock in such detail that if you place your rock on the desk up front and give your description to another, that person can go to the rock pile and find your rock. (We will actually do this!) You need a paper and an electronic copy.

Now, you are the proud owner of a rock shop of some sort. Write an ad designed to sell your rock to others. Consider audience. Who needs your rock. Convince those buyers . You must come up with at lest seven sentences. (Go write!- 10 minutes)

Sharing - sell your rock.

At the end of the activity you will have the following posted in CANVAS:
A. Notes about your rock
B. Description of your rock in sentences
C. A sentence describing your intended audience.
D.. A persuasive paragraph designed to sell your rock.

(35 points)

Part II: Adding support to your C/C essay.

To add proof that your opinion about the two topic is correct and to keep from sounding like a list maker, look for information about:

A. History (
B. Science
C. News
D. Art (We did this on Monday)
E. Experiences of others
F. Personal Experience
G. Quotations about
H. Statistics
I. Literature & Media & Movies (YouTube counts. What do you find there?)

Keep track of your sources!

(15 minute quick research - be ready to share what you find. Post notes in Canvas.)
(10 minute interview time)

Post your in-class notes in Canvas. (Assignments section) Continue the research at home. Post additional notes. Again, keep track of your sources.

Does the essay have these parts:

  • Introduction?
  • Information about Topic 1?
  • Transitional paragraph or sentence to get the reader from Topic 1 to Topic 2?
  • Information about Topic 2?
  • Conclusion?
Carefully study the Language Use points. Note on the rubric.

Authors - you can take care of many of the Language Use Issues by reading your paper out loud to yourself or to another. Some things just won't sound right. You can fix those!
